Teaching
A teacher first
My first job, in 2011, was teaching English as a foreign language, and I have never really stopped. It has since taken me from courses for journalists in Brazil to workshops at Cambridge.
Today I teach the technology that shaped my career in journalism and in research, especially AI. That means looking at it critically, from a media and journalism perspective, and putting it to work as a research tool.
My workshops can be adapted for different departments, universities, and research groups. To bring one to yours, get in touch.
- Too Many; Didn't Read? Classifying Large Datasets with LLMs
Half-day, hands-on workshop on using large language models to classify large datasets and extract information at scale, and on testing whether the results can be trusted. Participants write a codebook and a structured prompt, classify a real dataset (UK Parliament petitions on immigration), then validate the output against gold-standard labels by measuring agreement and analysing errors. No programming needed: one track runs from a Google Sheets template, the other from a Colab notebook.
- Why privacy and data protection matter more than ever
Guest lecture in Lab Sociedade Digital, an ITS Rio course delivered with Folha de S.Paulo and Unico for 80 selected journalists and content creators, covering data protection, information security, and digital identity. Original title: 'Proteção de Dados e Cibersegurança: por que privacidade e proteção de dados são cada vez mais relevantes?'.
- Digital security for local newsrooms
Taught the digital security module of Jornalismo Local Sustentável, Abraji's free eight-week online course for local newsrooms, supported by the Facebook Journalism Project and open to up to 3,000 journalists across Brazil.
